Big Read of the Day: An investigation will be launched into allegations, which appear in this week’s Rolling Stone magazine, that Afghanistan-based US Army soldiers trained in psychological operations (PSY-OPS) were ordered by three-star general William Caldwell to manipulate US Senators and other VIPs into providing additional funding for the war effort.
Targeted visitors included Sens. John McCain, Joe Lieberman, Jack Reed, Al Franken and Carl Levin; Rep. Steve Israel of the House Appropriations Committee; and Adm. Mike Mullen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
According to whistleblower Lt. Colonel Michael Holmes, head of the Information Operations unit who spoke with Rolling Stone, when he and his unit refused to execute the potentially illegal order, they were “subjected to a campaign of retaliation.”
“My job in psy-ops is to play with people’s heads, to get the enemy to behave the way we want them to behave,” Holmes is quoted as saying. “I’m prohibited from doing that to our own people. When you ask me to try to use these skills on senators and congressman, you’re crossing a line.”
A spokesman for Caldwell released a statement saying the general “categorically denies the assertion that the command used an Information Operations Cell to influence Distinguished Visitors.” A military statement said a probe would be ordered but that “it would be inappropriate to comment any further at this time.”
…what!?

PSY-OPS is now referred to as Information Operations. Although the name has changed, they still run the same missions.
